This is a “quote” by John Hodgman, or maybe just something attributed to him. I couldn’t really find a specific source, and I didn’t try very hard.
The idea here though is that narratives “work” better or are more interesting when details are specific. In Calvin & Hobbes, instead of the dad generically having a white collar office job, he is specifically a patent lawyer. John thinks this resonates better.
